Over the last week many of you have made the comment, "This sounds like Science class." Yes, it does, Science and Technology goes hand-in-hand. Science is the study of the natural world and Technology is studying the man-made world; or to put it another way, studying how we have changed the natural world to meet our needs. As we use Science to find out more and more about our world, we come up with new ideas and ways to make our world better using technology.
The new technology sometimes allows us to re-examine the natural world in a different way, like when the microscope was invented. The microscope allowed us to see and explore our world at a level we had not explored before. Exploring at this new level lead us to a better understanding of medicine, sanitation, chemistry, metallurgy (creating stronger types of metals), etc... This new understanding allowed us to create new machines and methods (technology) which lead to new discoveries. So it is a cycle of development.
When a new level starts being developed several things happen: first, a "fad" of using the new technology starts up, if the use of the new technology meets our needs in a way that it becomes 'essential' then the technology stays around and develops more (like the telephone.) But if the new technology doesn't meet our needs in an essential way it falls to the wayside and is used only by a few people, sometimes in specialized ways (like satellite radio.)
What are some technology items that you find essential, that you have to have? Why do you find them essential?
